Ministry of Water and Environment in conjuction with Kibaale Local Governmnet have launched the demarcations and installation of pillars on boundaries of wetlands that are connecting into river Muziizi.

Held in villages of Katebe in Karama Sub County and Bwemadi in Babango Bubango Sub County Kibaale district, the launch was witnessed by many stakeholders who were told to vacate the wetlands or face arrest. Daniel Businge from the Ministry said that it was better to deploy law enforcers to cause arrests of those who fail to heed to the call, all done in the efforts to save and  conserve of the environment.

He says 100metres will be measured on the big and between 30 to 50 meters on small wetlands according to the degradation and the exercise kicks off with effect immediately by officials from the District Natural Resource department.

During an open discussion, the affected individuals raised worries of losing their land as a result of the exercise.

Among others, they requested at least to be given a grace period of 5 months so as to harvest the already planted crops and also to be allowed to perform activities that cannot degrade the wetlands like brick laying and fish farming among others.

In response, Bernard Alinaitwe the Principal Wetland Officer from the Ministry says, they will harmonize and incase of any challenges they should contact the concerned people for help but granted them a grace period of 5 months to harvest the remaining crops.
